A loon on it's nest at Lake Pennesseewassee, near Norway in west central Maine. I was out canoeing with my son at dawn, when we saw a pair of loons in water. Shortly later we saw one of them get onto it's nest. It allowed us to get reasonably close so I could get this photo with my telephoto lens. One of the highlights of the trip was having the other loon swim underwater next to the canoe.
Loons are aquatic birds that are known for their striking appearance and haunting calls. They are found in North America, Europe, and Asia and are known for their ability to swim and dive underwater to catch fish. Loons have a distinctive appearance, with black and white feathers, a long, pointed bill, and red eyes. They are also known for their eerie wails and yodels, which are often heard echoing across lakes and other bodies of water. In some cultures, loons are considered to be a symbol of peace and tranquility, while in others, they are associated with death and the supernatural.
I am a nature and landscape photographer based in Madison, WI, with images from around the world. I am originally from Australia, but have lived in New Brunswick, Canada, and Socorro, New Mexico, before moving to Madison. I am trained as a geologist, and still teach introductory geology classes (need to pay the bills somehow).. The love of the outdoors has strongly influenced my photography, initially in Australia, but then in the the NW Territories of Canada (I was there doing geology), and the desert of New Mexico. Now I find the beauty around where I live in Madison. If you live in the Madison area, contact me, and I can print images for you (save on postage).
